PhoenixGold PLD1

Does it automatically put out a 8v or can i adjust that with the 0-20db adjustment? I don;t want my AQ1200 to overheat...

And how do I tune this thing? Bass knob all the way up, line driver all the way up and then set gains until it clips?

I can tell you from experience that turning the PLD1 up simply allows me to run less gain on my amplifiers. In no way does it add any spl or make a difference in sound. We've tested this with a couple different line drivers in many different vehicles at my shop.

The only reason I use one at all is for the simplicity of having one knob to adjust all four of my sub amps. It allows me the fine tuning I need to go from spl to Bass Boxing to Bass Race without having to adjust & match 4 separate gains.

yeah less gain on the amp is a good thing.

i used one, loved it. going from the 5v-6v clarion deck to that i noticed a difference for the better. the sub amp didnt need as much gain to reach full output. to the ear it hit slightly harder and sounded better. it was really benefitial to rock songs that sometimes lacked a strong bass signal. Keep an eye out for that clip indicator, definitly a very helpful thing when tuning a setup. I light flicker is okay but a solid lit LED on every bass note isnt.

the other thing i really like about the PLD1's are they are old school ish and were some of the last made in the USA. I've used a few line drivers and this is much better than most newer stuff made. better quality IMO than the newer PG line drivers.

That's my goal.. With my kenwood deck, the gain ins up about 70% at a 1 ohm load. And I fugred without getting a new deck, this would be the cheaper and easier way to do it.

Thanks for the tips!

Less gain on the amp for the same output makes no difference. From an ease of tuning multiple amps it makes a bit of sense, but if you think that 1000w of output with the gain set to 1/4 and 1000w of output with the gain at 1/2 makes a difference in how hot the amp runs, you clearly have no idea how an amp gain adjustment works or even what it does.

i thought less gain ussually results in less distortion ( although its barely audible anyways in the substage). to the ear i noticed the bass sounded a little better and hit just a hair bit harder....noticeably better than with the weaker signal i was sending before. and i made a mistake before. my sub signal was coming off an very old alpine eq (3221 iirc), so the output voltage on that was probably in the 2v-4v tops range...not 6v like i mentioned before. so a 2v to 8v jump will probably yield more noticable differences than say 5v or 6v to 8v.

in any event, these units are usa made quality stuff. with the right equipment you can hear the difference between a semi clipped 4v signal to a clean 8v signal. thats from personal experience.

Kind of an update...installed this thing a couple of months ago and HOLY SHYT!! What a difference! Bass hit cleaner and harder!! Definitely recommend this to anyone
