Perma Poxy 5 minute epoxy, good for recones?

the first time i thought maybe i'd layed it on too thin, so i went thick the second time. it seemed stronger, but still didnt last long. i let it cure for 2 days both times.

you may have different results, mine was a DD recone, which has a plastic ring attached to the spider, so it was plastic to metal.

Yes the recone took place last night, and its not getting installed until tommorow/later this week... It was a Mach 5 recone which doesn't have that plastic spider ring, its just spider to metal , and surround to metal contact... it was gobbed on there real good, and we had to go around and scrape off the excess, but while I was wedging a razor underneat gobs to pry them off, one of the longer gobs of dried epoxy , as I attempted to pry it up, it lifted part of the surround with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

So I stopped and we lifted on the inside of the surround and it was very firm, not going anywhere. So most likely we're just going to leave it ugly as it sits to not tempt it from seperating....

I'm quite sure it will be fine, its just the dried epoxy likes to stick together, so if you pry up on parts on the outer mounting rim, it will bring up the parts underneath the surround also... Not sure if thats a good or bad thing...

!!!!
i specifically asked you if it was the "5 minute epoxy" from walmart, or the stuff that said it was for marine purposes, and you said the 5 minute epoxy. had 2 recones have the spider to basket come loose after a day or two, before i got the bob smith ic-3000 black rubberized CA glue. used that on the spider-basket, surround, and dustcap, and its still going strong.

luckily the 5 minute shit sucked so bad, i was able to just pull the surround back up even after 2 days of drying with my fingers alone, and saved having to buy another recone. first time, i already had the dustcap on and had to cut that back off //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

yes, i do know how to rough up + clean metal and soft material to allow glue to soak in and adhere better, and did so in both cases.

The regular stuff should have worked fine.. either you got an extremely cheap brand, it was a bad batch, it wasn't mixed properly, or you didn't use enough..

FYI, you can use epoxy for everything except the surround.. (note that polypropylene dust caps should be roughed up with sand paper)

it was devcon brand, the stuff they sell at walmart. chad recommended that, so i bought it.

was mixed up very well, 50/50 mixture as per instructions. came in a dual syringe, so the plunger equally dispensed from both sides. first time maybe wasnt enough, but the second time i used more than enough. changed nothing other than the glue used in the last recone, and its been taking my abuse for the last couple months.

when i pulled the stuff back up, the dried glue was all on the surround and spider. none of it stuck to the basket.

Sorry to hear man, I just go in walmart and grab the "5minute" stuff. It works fine for me. It also may have to do with the plastic on the dd recone not adhering to it.

Again sorry Try finding a shop with ca glue nearby?

And I'm 99.9% sure you can use the marine grade epoxy on the surround too, not sure why you couldn't.

thats what i'm thinking is that it didnt like the material. did basically the same thing on the surround too though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

this was a couple months back, i got it squared away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm sure the rooms next to you loved that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
You have no idea man, I'm suprised the guys that slept in there didn't die. CA Glue Fumes, Fumes from grinding Nomex spiders/CA glue ( which is the worst smell EVER ), along with accelerator and epoxy. It was quite rediculous.

That hotel was nice as hell too. I got a room away from the craziness a few floors up and had a jacuzzi tub king size bed etc.

Man I wish finals was back there again, so so much fun

you can use 5min epoxy. i usualy go for the 30minute high strenght exposy as supposedly it's a stronger bond. i always let the recones sit for at least 18hrs prior to any use. so far everything i've recones has been fine. i've got a recone where the surround itself had to be torn off as the epoxy did it's job..

Well, I suppose you can.. some surrounds are more porous then others and some may not hold... Ideally you should use an adhesive that will bite into the foam or rubber...
