What's the difference between this and the 9500 I hear so much about? Also need any 6.5 midrange speakers, super small budget Sony amp?

do need some 6.5... only some high end tho.

basically, not much.

this detects laser, k, ka, X, POP mode. shows Voltage if wanted. variable lighting, has a secondary indicator on the actual power plug...

its a great unit. im strapped for cash..

That depends on which platform it's using.

If it's the newer M4 platform it should perform about like a 9500i or ix without the GPS features for red-light cams and filters.

However, the ~1.5k 9500CI is a custom-install unit. It runs on the M3 platform and comes with laser-jammers. The M3 platform is currently the most sensitive radar platform on the market. The Redline, STi Driver and STi-R plus all use the M3 platform as well. (Made by Beltronics and Escort) -None of the X50 platforms are offered with the M3 platform.-

If it's an older S7 unit, I may be interested in it.

OP, just look at the sticker with the serial number. There's a number that starts with "QLK" or something and ends with either "M4" or "S7".
