Well, if the paint is actually chipping, then your options trim down quite fast.
Body work & re-paint
or
You could try touch up paint matched to your trucks color code.
Build it up carefully in the chips, and then when dry, buff the area out with rubbing compound, then a cleaner wax, polish, and then the final wax.
I've seen favorable results doing the touch up method, however, don't expect a show stopping finish. Just a quality repair.
Regarding your present autobody "professional" (
I have changed colors on several cars myself and can disprove his claims with a snap of the fingers.

Yep, not even close to the original color.
Car was painted over a year ago. Not a single problem to date.
Currently I am taking my 89 Mustang from a Medium Blue and changing it to a Bright Silver Metallic.
True, it is generally easier for the auto body people to use the same color, as less prep is required compared to that of changing colors.
BTW- most paints are "baked" on in body shops today to aid in the paint adhesion and drying time.
Insurance companies want car's in and out as fast as possible so they can settle and close their claims. The heat booth speeds things up!
You are being fed a gigantic line of BS by this body shop. Not only that, they appear to be d*mn lazy. Either way, I would advise against any business ventures with them.
I am curious as to why it would not last or why you would not be happy with a new color?
Mabey this same person would care to explain this out in great detail.
I personally call his bluff. I can also disprove it, on a consistant basis, by the number of cars that I have changed color on.
I'm severely obsessive compulsive when it comes to my cars. Every aspect of them has to be just right.
I am more than satisfied.
You know what you want. Grab a different body shop, talk with them a little, tell them what you would like.
Most importantly, stop by while they are working on your car, just to show that you are interested in the process.
Always beneficial to have a few friends, or make a few new ones that are in these lines of work.
They can offer great advice, and some very cool stories from time to time!
