You don't need to plug it in. Which is good, the PCM on your car limits the voltage = bad. Mine limits it around 13.8-13.9 etc.

the self exciting will turn its self on automatically when the car starts.

The only bad thing is that you will get charging error lights on the dash

So just bolt up and connect big 3 wires and that's it?

Yep that's all you need it has a "self exciting regulator" aka when it starts turning, it turns it on.

i have a PCM controlled HO in my cobalt and I hate it. I was wondering if you get a battery light it will pass inspection or do you have to put the old alt back?

I would check the inspection laws in your state. I do not believe that a charging light would fail as much as emissions or poor brakes.
