Overpowering components

Specifically focal p165 v30 they are being powered by a mosconi gladen 240.2. I set the amp at 120 watts per channel with a 1000hz 0db tone. When I play them at the max volume that iset the amp at they will cut out. No bass boost the eq is set the same or cut never any boost.

I was thinking maybe there is some kind of protection built into the crossover? All wiring is tight brand new rca's and voltage is good. What else could it be? Thanks in advance.

Be care because for one you are overpowering those speakers rms ratings by about 40wrms and playing them full tilt like that you will eventually blow them. I'm currently running the P165v15's off a Phoenix Gold Ti210004 and I'm feeding them more than rms but I'm also careful with the volume knob. In fact I'm currently building a new configuration where I'll be running that set active with each driver being fed off it's own dedicated channel from that same amp.

I don't remember there being any protection circuit in the passives but that doesn't mean it's not there, I just don't remember.

just an idea - but you say they "cut out" could this possibly be your amp going in to protection mode and turning it self off for a little then coming back on ?

If there is protection built into the crossovers it will only affect the tweeter outputs, and a thermal protection device may take several minutes to recover. The first thing to try is to turn the gain down on the amplifier. If you didn't use an oscilloscope to check the pre-outs on the head unit you may want to back the volume off a bit as well.

its a pioneer avhp4300 head unit volume set to 30/40 when setting gains im all but positive it isnt clipping. the components sound fantastic before they shut down and they recover right away. the amp set no where near full output so i dont think that is clipping. Back to the drawing board.

Could be a bad ground on the amp. Does the amp heats up?

maybe dropping under 12v?
