lawl...hardly. The only problem with using the IRC is that its not really friendly, no pretty graphics and sparkley buttons, no advertisements (other than romanians running stupid scripts), and no easy GUI to navigate. And you sort of are required to have half a brain to use it so you wont have some asshole uploading viruses to you. So its not a "safe" method, but if your even slightly pc savvy you can leech your heart out.

i used to use that until i started using oink. it is actually pretty good.

my thought process was that IRC is open to anyone really, and oink as an invite only. kinda tricked my self into thinking oink was safe, especially aftering hearing about IRC not being any safer than any other place. not sure how true that is though.

again, why arent you fools using IRC, is it just because its not a point and click GUI ?

The reason I didn't use IRC much when I was using OiNK was because OiNK has way better selection...way better and it's easier to find. And I don't know of any IRC channels that have a lot of FLAC rips, but finding channels is half the problem.

well the thing about the IRC is that there are so many people on it, .... like millions....that you are but a grain of sand in a big sandlot - so to speak. IRC is a legitimate backbone of many point to point applications and chat clients and it doesnt exist in just one server, it exists in tens of thousands.
