Anyways the ignorance of the general populace on this subject is astounding. I'd love to have the time and interest to refute every stupid/ignorant remark I've read in just the last page or two but I'm not going to bother.

im sure you wont have an issue trying to find a buyer for the car, plus we all know once it hits 10,000miles your going to get rid of it anyways.

A) No depreciating asset is ever an investment
B) The extra money spent on a hybrid over the comparable gasoline model negates quite a bit of mileage... lets do some math
A normal Honda civic gets avg of 31.6mpg (using reported #'s to epa's website)
A Hybrid Civic gets 45.1mpg
That's a 13.5mpg better... neat...
Using MSRP's the base Hybrid is 3890 more than a base EX which is comparably equipped (the DX is several thousand less than the EX)
Now for some math:
@12k miles a year
(12000/31.6)*4 = 1,581
(12000/45.1)*4 = 1,064
A savings of $517 a year in fuel
3860/517 = 7.4 years until the hybrid pays off it's extra cost
That's of course assuming that you did not got some ridiculous government credit for buying a hybrid, that the maintenance costs are the same and that someone is going to be willing to buy a 90k mile hybrid car.... my guess the savings is negligible at best... gas prices would have to double overnight to bring the cost of ownership equal within 4 years which is how long alot of people keep their new cars.... and if gas was $8 a gallon overnight the price spread of hybrid to a conventional car would widen....

Not to mention if you taken that 3860 you saved and put it in say a a super safe CD it would grow $1,300 which would take 2.5 years to overcome....

The "hybrid saves me money" argument is just a total fallacy... if it makes you feel better about the environment or makes you feel better about spending money on food/beer then maybe it's worth it to you...
and don't forget to find out if you can get a tax cred for it...
