Speaking of old speakers -- my Dad's 1970s Sansui 12" woofers still work great. They have a half roll shaped, inverted, coated cloth surround. Actually pretty high excursion for the time period.

they did have some big ones like a foot and a half long, I remember a dude had one in a dodge shadow with 2 15s in a bandpass, pretty loud
