Are the frames on the first pair a little scuffed up?

The frames aren't scuffed up, the finish on them is a matted finish that kind of has some texture. I think that what you are seeing is around the lenses there are some slightly darker areas that the photos seem to make look darker than they actually are.

I love the red lenses but them being polarized adds a pretty penny...

Indeed, they were expensive as hell when I got them, but I keep glasses for a very long time, and I tend to take very good care of them.
