Not Happy with AVN5435!

I bought the Eclipse AVN5435 and it is horrible. I am going to return it and pick up something else, but I need some direction!

The user interface and display on the 5435 are great and impressed me at the store, but the ipod adapter interface and functionality blows, it is extremely irritating that there is no sub control (there is a sub output control, but not the option to turn them off when the kids get in the car), and the fact that they are charging $300+ for the upgraded Nav disk (just bought it and it is already outdated, I understand that it's an older model and that's what was distributed with it, but $300+ is insane).

What I need is a double din DVD unit with Nav and good Ipod control. It also needs to be easily bypassed so that my son can watch movies from the middle of the back seat.

I am considering the Eclipse AVN6600 (keeps the display and interface I like, adds full Ipod functionality, comes with the updated Nav disk, but does not solve the sub issue - I would install a switch in the remote line to kill the subs), the Pioneer Z1 (unit looks awesome, Ipod adapter has had good reviews, but don't know how easy the bypass is), or possible some Kenwood units with the seperate Nav unit.

I thought the 5435 was going to be it, so any advice/experience with these units would be appreciated.

wow thanks for posting mikey, i was just about to purchase a avn5435 from work, thought it be alot better, guess not. where did u purchase it from? i have been looking in too the pioneer Z1 aswell but way out my price range and i dont get accomadation on pioneers like eclipse offers.

I actually got a good deal on it from CC, I think I paid $1100 + tax (wanted the warranty) Tell them you will take their warranty and they will drop the price like crazy on some things, then I returned the warranty a couple days later and kept the unit. I actually could make due with it, because of the good price, if it wasn't going to be $300+ for the updated nav disk. I can get the 6600 for around 15-1600 I believe (no warranty), so I don't think it is worth it. The only thing holding me back from the Z1 right now is the bypass issue. I have read that some bypass by turning the lights on and off 3 times before the music starts, but f-that.

**** they gave it too u dirt cheap... wow. my d300 was 600$ //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif but i dont wanna add the navi too it cause it is waste from what i hear, and i rather go double din now.

get the avic z1...flawless unit
Hardly... Since i looked around for 4 months now researching AV/AVN head units. I came to this conclusion, if you run subs...

voice recognition is useless.

cd player will not play dvd videoon its main screen even if you bypass it, unless you hard wire it, due to its programming.

does not play dvd audio

pioneer has changed there navigation "system" twice in the last year, from company to company, there nav has issues. the previous avics have.

the z1 you pay 300$ more for a hdd thats useless it does not rip cds. It rips OEM cds ones you buy in the store only.

the deck also does not play WMA WMV MPEG or SCDS OR SDVD...

In simple if you want nav, rear entertainment. Great unit. Other wise quit.

The thing pioneer should do is combine z1, 7800, and the 6disk

make a wvga divx wma mp3 wav aac double sided dvd 8v preout voice nav, 6 dvd disk changer in dash, on a 7 inch screen (with double din and single din models) use as much touch screen as possible and say screw the buttons less the better, radial volume is horrible IMO.

Also with pioneer if you get a AVH unit... the addon nav is 1200$ and is not voice recognition and there portible nav is just horrible does not intigrade at all with head units like alpines.

Sorry to kick sandcastles over but i did alot of research and spent time looking up alot of models, IMO the 06 line of av/avn/avh blah blah is lots of crap. AMAZING features but pioneer especialy spread the spectrium way too far.

Thats all. Thanks for reading. Hope you could. Hope I helped

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif , where did you do your research? You have got all of your facts wrong my friend.

voice recognition is useless.
It can be useless but that all depends on the user. It always a nice option to have. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You don't need to hard wire anything. The CD/DVD player will play DVDs, of any sort including copies as long as the hand brake is up. However their is a simple bypass that I will get to later which will let you play DVDs whenever.

does not play dvd audio
This unit does have the ability to play DVD audio but only if you burn it correctly. Burning as a regular data mp3 dvd won't work however burning as a DVD audio with a program such a Roxio will play through the units DVD player flawlessly, not the CD player.

I really don't see you point here. Have you ever heard of "change is good". You basically contradict yourself here saying the previous avics have had issues so wouldn't you want them to change it for the better. The Avic-Z1 has 11+ million POIs which far surpasses any other Navi System that I know of.

the z1 you pay 300$ more for a hdd thats useless it does not rip cds. It rips OEM cds ones you buy in the store only.
Wrong again..., The HDD is not useless. It can rips CDs as long as they are audio cds (they don't have to be OEM), not data/mp3 cds.

On another note, the HDD uses 20GB to store its maps for the Navi. This way, it is quicker to read from the HDD rather than a DVD.

the deck also does not play WMA WMV MPEG or SCDS OR SDVD...
I am pretty sure you are wrong here too. I just got the unit so I am still testing out its features. However, I know it can play WMAs, and the other formats can always be converted to DVD format for it to be playable if you really wanted them.

The rest of what you said is just jibberish. You really need to get your facts straight when you do your research. Its nice that you are trying to help but your not in this case.

I know I have my facts straight because I have the Avic-Z1 and I have tested and done almost everything that you say the unit couldn't do.

Now onto the bypass. Of course you could just flip the parking lights on and off before the units turns on to get full functionality while driving but as the OP said, that would be sort of a hassle.

If your like me and you like automation, then all you need is a simple $25 easy-to-install (depends on user) module that bypasses the Avic-Z1 everytime automatically. This can be found here:

Good luck with your Navi decision, but I would have to say the the Avic-Z1 fulfills almost all of your needs.

Alpine actually has the best Ipod controlability but you need to buy the screen and then the brain for navigation separately.
