Does the gain matter if the amp your using can't even come close to maxing out the rms least of all the max wattage of the subs your using? With the volume up 30/34 on my hu i can turn to gain all over the place and i can't hear any type of distortion etc...so is it still worth it to set it with a dmm?

Yes, still set it with a DMM. Even if the amp is rated at less than the RMS rating of the sub, the amp still may send a clipped signal to the sub. It's the clipped signal that may cause the damage, not necessarily the power being fed to it.

there has to be distortion!! you may also be running a very weak input signal to that amp

lol mikeyboc, i didn't even see you post that while i was typing my post...with the pioneer amp 7200gm model i have i can turn the gain up all the way with the +12db bass boost up and no distortion at all.

Not hearing any distortion, and having no distortion are two different things. More than likely it is there, but you don's know what it sounds like.

ok, i can test that in 5 minutes... right now im just using the sub low outputs of the hu, however i can easily take my rear 6x9's speaker wires and run them into the high input of the amp, wouldn't that give it a better signal and i can see if theres distortion then.

what should distortion sound like? Is it a fuzzy like or type of bad radio channel being recieved noise?

Do that, then turn up all your gains, bass boost, and anything else you can get your hands on. Then run a nice little 40-50HZ sign wave with the HU up all the way, and let me know how it worrks out.

the only video camera i've got is a 10 year old pos, with a fed up lens. i'll still test the high input thing though, except i don't have a test tone cd on hand, that'll take 10 minutes to dl and burn...
