NFL Free Agency Approaches - Spread Rumors Here

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7866918?MSNHPHMA

Ben Roethlisberger signed an eight-year extension worth $102 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid players.
The deal includes more than $36 million guaranteed, and keeps Roethlisberger with the Steelers through 2015.

The extension was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

"Ben has been an outstanding leader on the field for the Steelers since his rookie year and we are very happy to know that he will be our quarterback for many years to come," Steelers president Art Rooney II said Monday in a statement.

Roethlisberger turned 26 on Sunday and said the contract was a great birthday present.

"This is about being a Pittsburgh Steeler for as long as I can be. I love Pittsburgh," Roethlisberger said. He said he "wanted to be like the Dan Marinos, like the John Elways, guys who played with one team their whole career."

The Pro Bowl quarterback led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory two years ago and has been the starter in all four of seasons he's been with the team.

Roethlisberger threw 32 touchdown passes with only 11 interceptions in leading the Steelers to the playoffs this season, bouncing back from an injury-marred season.

He was hurt in a serious motorcycle accident in the 2006 offseason, then underwent an appendectomy. Although he started 15 games, his play was subpar. He threw 23 interceptions, three more than he had thrown in his first two seasons, and Pittsburgh failed to make the playoffs.

This season, he led the Steelers to a 10-6 record and the AFC North title before they were eliminated by Jacksonville in the playoffs.

Roethlisberger was the third quarterback taken in the '04 draft, behind Eli Manning and Philip Rivers, and the 11th choice overall. He started 13 games his rookie season and was voted offensive rookie of the year, the first quarterback to win the award since it was first given in 1957. The next year he led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory.

Pace to get $22M guaranteed in big deal with Jets

The New York Jets have agreed to a six-year, $42 million deal with DE/LB Calvin Pace.

Pace, a five-year Arizona Cardinals veteran. began his career as a defensive end before moving to linebacker in a 3-4 front in 2007.

Pace will receive a $20 million signing bonus, with $22 million of the deal guaranteed.

He chose between offers from the Dolphins and Jets.

Briggs agrees to stay with Bears

Lance Briggs, who tried for a year to leave the Bears for a huge contract, agreed Saturday night to a six-year, $36 million deal to stay with Chicago.

The Bears franchised him a year ago, and Briggs wasn't happy about it. At one point, he pushed for a trade to the Washington Redskins that fell through and didn't happen right before the draft.

"I'm extremely happy about it,"' Briggs told the Chicago Tribune. "With Bernard [berrian] signing with the Vikings, I think it gave me the opportunity to come home. I'm happy to return to the team that I started my career with."

In order to gain a chance at the free-agent market, Briggs worked out a deal with the franchise tag that gave him the chance to earn complete free agency if he hit a certain percentage of playing time. He won that freedom but couldn't come up with a deal from another team in the first two days of free agency.

Wow, man the Jets are making some moves. Sign Pace, Faneca, trade for Jenkins and supposedly just signed Damien Woody, former Pats lineman.

ROBERTSON DEAL ISN'T HAPPENING

For the second time since Friday, a deal that the Bengals thought they'd make to upgrade a subpar defense has fallen apart.

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the trade between the Jets and the Bengals for New York defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is off.

The sticking point was Cincy's insistence that Robertson re-do a contract that is set to pay him $9.8 million in 2008. Unless and until the Jets find a team for whom Robertson is willing to take a haircut, the likelihood is that Robertson eventually will be cut before a $3 million roster bonus comes due in June.

Mar 03, 2008 - For the fourth time since 2005, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have swung a trade to land a quarterback. This time, they've added a prolific passer with whom they are already very familiar.

On Monday, the Buccaneers sent an undisclosed 2009 draft pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for Brian Griese, an 11th-year veteran with more than 18,000 career passing yards on his resume. Griese was a Buccaneer during the 2004 and 2005 seasons before signing with Chicago as a free agent in 2006.

As a reserve to Rex Grossman in Chicago, Griese played in just 13 games with six starts over his two seasons with the Bears. All six of his starts came last year, as he led the Bears to a 3-3 record during a month-and-a-half at the helm; Chicago was 4-6 in the 10 games he did not start.......
