New to ported boxes, qvestions

I have never built a ported box before, and I has some questions regarding tuning and port specs. This will be for a single SSA DCON 10".

I've cut the wood for a 1 cube wedge box that will butt up nicely (hopefuly) against my rear seats. SSA recommends a tuning of 28-33 Hz, and after being so disappointed by the inability of my sealed-ness to do anything below high 30s, I was thinking of tuning to 29 or 30. I met Klash though yesterday at a school thing, and he was saying how 32 Hz will dig into 20s just fine... Although he will be running an 18. I listen to lots of dubstep and want my lows, but also some rock and etc. and don't want my upper bass to **** arse. Thoughts?

I will be using an aeroport, as they are lighter and seem easier to tweak. However I have no idea what diameter tube to use... I can enter 2" or 4" or whatever into calculators and it'll give me lengths that work for each... How does one determine what diameter is best for a given application?

For example if I tell the12Volt calculator a port diameter of 1" and 30Hz tuning, it tells me I need 1.62" of port.

If I tell it a port diameter of 2" and 30Hz tuning, it tells me I need 7.944" of port... How I know what diameter to use?

Stho:

1) Thoughts on tuning for this sub?

2) Port diameter business?

Thanks guys //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Mmkay - the box is 18.5" long internally, and there's a sub in thurrh - so I'd have to do an angly bit probably...

May I ask how you came up with 3"?

And would there be a disadvantage to going with 2"? that would fit perfectly.

In traditional slot ported boxes, you want anywhere from 12-16in of port area depending on how much you want to load your driver. For aeroports, you want to cut that size in half, so 6-8in of port area. So a 3" aeroport has roughly 7in of port area, so here are some approxamate port lengths...

28hz: 22.1"

29hz: 20.5"

30hz: 19"

31hz: 17.6"

32hz: 16.5"

You could also use 3 2" ports for 9.4" of port area which would load your driver less and make it easier to get deeper with less power, but it would make it easier for the sub to bottom out, but you'd just have to be conscious of your power.

It was great meeting you last night, It's almost no problem to switch to B section, and I was talking with one of the coop manager, and she said to send her my resume and she'd get it to brembo and some other company both of which were based in michigan, and both of which provided housing, and both of would put me in B section. So I'm pretty excited, although I don't know if I want to start working that early o_o

WOOHOO B SECTION! I just learned today that two of my best friends here were originally A section and transferred.

So wait - by port area do you mean circumference? or total inner surface area of the cylinder?

Ahhh. I was being silly with my calculations //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Could I just use two 2" ports for 6.28 square inches of port area? That would be more power handlingy and such?

Sorry another question - The calculator says that using two 2" ports, Flare Length Port Required: 18.35". Does that mean 18.35" each or total? so two 9.175" ports or two 18.35" ports?

Thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

18.35" PER port.

here is the thing thou, you said you built a sealed box with no avail? personally i LOVE the roll off you achieve when running a sealed application. You get a much steeper roll off, more than -24db slope, when using a ported box. Now with your box, you should use one 3" flared aeroport due to port area. One 2" will be to small and the probability of port noise increases. Now for the length on a 3" aero you can have it 15" long for a 34hz tuning which will play into the upper 20 range. Another issue I see is you might be expecting alot more from this little 10" than it can produce. by simply throwing it into a ported box wont magically increase the output 10x. It will increase some but not like "woah!" if you get what im saying.

Well I've heard a few single 10s, both ported and sealed, and both have been WAY loud enough for me. The reason I decided on ported was because I've been disappointed with sealed's inability to play lower notes and for the slight increase in decibality.

My box is 19.5" wide, a wedge with 3 flat sides (if you're looking in from outside of the trunk - you made the cutsheet Don //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif) and I will have about 9" of length from the left side of the box to where the sub will begin to interfere with the port if I put the sub as far to the right as possible. I'm wondering if I could squish the port below the sub's magnet if I mount the sub as high as possible... I kind of doubt it as the box will be only 12" high and I'll have to account for the height the flare will require.

I just sketched it out and I think I might be able to make a 15" if I begin at the back bottom left corner, travel 8ish inches, right angle upward towards the top front edge, and then travel 7". So my port would be floating diagonally in midair in the middle of the box.

Do aeroports need additional support inside the box?

I've been looking on partsexpress and was thinking about going with the precision ports but they're not long enough and I don't see a right-angle option //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible of course - is there a better place to buy the stuff? The only other feasible option for me on there seems to be the dayton audio stuff and that's getting a lil ridiculous, especially if I have to do two right angles. The ABS pipe stock would be nice if I can find flares and angles to fit it...

Does your boxes sides have any clearance on the sideof the trunk? You could have theport running long ways across the box and you could just do a 180band you could fit 36" or port if you wanted to
