new precision power amps

My understanding the line up break up this way:

Sedona - budget entry level Class A/B line.

Power Class - high fidelity Class A/B line.

Phantom - the new Class D amplifier line, shares components/boards with Polk's new Class D amplifiers.

I was shopping for an entry level amp and kind of shrugged off the Sedona line outright for being 'budget' line, but looking at its specs now it does seem fairly impressive for the money. Easily as good or better than comparable MB Quart or say Boston GTA gear. My belief is that PPI amplifiers usually perform close to the published specs.

Nothing even close to there old stuff...
Sigh...I'm not a PPI fanboy but it's tiring to see this claim. I've yet to read of someone taking a serious look at and TRYING new PPI amps and then honestly saying they regretted the purchase. They're pricing them extremely competitively, and yeah, they're not using 100% in-house designs but nobody is doing that in the same market segment.

I clamped this 4 channel that was in my blazer when i bought it just for fun and well 1 channel 60hrtz tone volume 3/4 only put out 11 watts.gain i think was halfway up.I wanted to open it up and see what it looks like but didnt feel like taking it all apart

oh and it was the 540.4 or something like that

website states that the sedona and power class as class d, just sayin.....
This depends on whether you're looking at full range amps or mono. The 2 and 4-channel Power Class are Class A/B (and are some of the cleanest amps for SQ system). The Phantom series are all compact Class D.

Haven't heard any of the new Sedona amps. But, if you purchase one understanding that they are the PPI entry level amps and don't expect alot of bells & whistles, you'll probably be satisfied. Haven't heard of any design flaws or numerous failures either.

All the buzz around PPI at the moment is with the new Phantom series. Powerful, compact, class D designs with price points that blow J-L out of the water. Several very positive reviews can be found over at DIYMA. According to Grizz Archer in product development with PPI, the Phantoms don't share the same boards as Polk. He also stated that the Phantom P1000.1 makes about 20% over rated power.

I'm very eager to try a new P900.5 if they can ever get them to market.

The gain knob half way??

Gain knobs are not power or volume knobs. They are gain knobs that adjust input sensitivity and are relative to input voltage.

Sedona and PowerClass are Class D for subwoofer amplifiers/channels only, otherwise A/B. Phantom are completely Class D and have quite a small footprint. I have not tried any but would like to. I have only heard good things but the Phantom series has not been out long enough for me to take the chance on them. I'd like to hear some more long-term feedback first, personally. I would also like to hear how they do with 8 ohm speakers because Class D amplifiers are not all the same when it comes to load impedances outside of their design parameters (and basically no car audio amps are designed for 8 ohm loads, at least when not bridged). I'm not running 8 ohm midbass drivers but I don't want to limit myself from doing so. I have run them in the past and very well may do so again in the future.

Also, I have no idea how well Steve knows how to clamp an amp.

Pasmag liked the P900.4 very much, for what it's worth. (I don't think it's worth THAT much, but I'd say it's worth a lot more than what Steve said.)

Time will tell how they stand up.

yes i know the gain is not a volume it was just for reference.as for clamping an amp I've done it a few times while doing 160's.no it wasent peak hold it was after 3sec done with a video camera that way i know exactly what meter was reading what.

and unless you have/had one tested how is anyone too know what they do.

shall i test it again? how would you guys like it done?

I'm not going to go over testing procedure with you... at least not right now. Far too lazy for that, and I'm sure you could find tons of info about it if you were to search. I will mention that I did not write that post as some sort of attempt to slam you or anything like that. I just regard a reasonably well-known magazine higher than most forum people, and I would expect all of you to do the same over me.
