Networking 101....noob question, im retarded?

Well....im catching a brainfart....and searching google leads me farrrr away from my problem.

Let me tell you what im trying too do:

Have a wireless router....hooked up too main computer through ethernet cable.

Now i been using laptop with wireless card, cuz its old...well i took it out and broke it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif.

So now im trying too run a cord from router too port on laptop.....and it usually just works.

But now it wont.....what am i doing wrong?

Do you have it set for dhcp or a static Ip? Did you disable any ports on the router? I don't mean synthetic ports. I mean physical ports.

I highly doubt he knows any of this. Chances are, his ethernet port was probably disabled when he used his wireless or he doesn't have it set up for DHCP.

Is the ethernet card enabled? Go into Device Manager (assuming Windows OS???), if anything has a red x by it, it's disabled. Enable it.

Go to run, and type is services.msc

A window will open and find Wired AutoConfig, make sure it is enabled and running. If it's not running, right click and go to properties. On the general tab, make sure startup type is automatic, and then start the process if it wasn't running.
