my girlfriends computer broke. help.

yesterday, she plugged her ipod in to charge it. few mins later im guessing, her computer is getting really slow, and starts to freeze. it would freeze and un-freeze a few times. then her computer automatically restarts itself, then comes to this black screen saying their is something wrong with her hard drive. another screen pops up asking if she wants to start in safe mode, reg mode, etc etc. she chooses reg mode and safe mode and windows just wont start up and she gets the same screen repeatedly asking if she wants to start in safe or reg mode.

Sounds like what I just went through, a dying (or dead) hard drive.

can she buy any hard drive or does it have to be a specific one

boot your windows cd and run recovery console

and then run

Chkdsk /r

this will try to recover any data lost and hopfully fix the problem

Yeah, its about an hour and a half job getting it back up with the basics.

You'll need to format the disk, reinstall the operating system, and reinstall every program she was using.

Does she have a rescue disc, or a copy of the OS?

Many rescue discs will have a mirror image of the initial setup as it came from the time she first bought it, including the original included programs it came setup with.

Its not hard, just real tedious.
