hey i just installed my new system alpine 9815 deck. type r component in the front, type s in the back, powered by an Alpine v12 mrv-f30 and it sounds great!

but.....

i also have a 12w6v2 sub with a rockford fosgate 1001bd mono amp which is a 500/1 rms amp. And the sub sounds odd.. it doesnt sound clean and hard like it should. I have no idea why. A friend told me that the part of the woofer that shows frome the box(sorry i dont know the name) was poping out really far, i dunno if that has anything to do with it.

any ideas why?

well the box is a "small box" i came in with a huge enclosed box, but when i went to get it installed the guy said that that box was too big and would end up breaking the sub, he told me these subs go good with small boxes so he hooked it up with a box its nothing special i think it was an mtx. He did tell me however told me that my sub sounded underpowered, i dont know why its a 400rms sub and im runnin 500rms on it. he didnt install the "punch bass" nob for the amp im just confused.

details about what the sub does...

it pops out real far like if air isnt getting out. my friend even said that its poping out way to much.

there was an odd smell when i turned it up, but im just thinkin that that was because they were new stuff, cuz it doesnt do that anymore.

wireing:

i got 4 guage badboy monster cable to the amp to the 1.0F cap and all that good stuff but from the amp to the sub he put 8 guage wire(i dont even know the brand, some glitter blue wire)

maybe i should connect the "punch bass" nob to the amp and turn it up, but doesnt my alpine 9815 act as the nob when you turn up the woofer?

If you guys can give me some advice that would be great...thanks

hmm, try hooking the sub up to a different amp.. even if you have a 4 channel amp, just bridge it to run @ a different ohm load - (you may have to go into the sub and change the terminals to have it be 8ohms)

The smell i snormal with most JL drivers, its the "break in smell", but as far as, your sub is popping out too far...well there could be several explanations. One is that your gains are up too high, whihc leads to distortion and could be why your sub sounds bad, another possiblity is that your friend has never seen a W6V2 in motion before, because they move A LOT, over a 20 mm excursion. Id try going to another place that didnt install your system and see if they can help you

well soon me and my friends are gonna try some of the advice you gave, so if you guys can keep giving me suggestions so i can hopefully figure this out today...

thanks a lot guys
