I haven't heard the Focals but the HEXs are pretty awesome.
A comment on your .mp3 listening, however....
The clarity on those will actually be more dependant on how the .mp3 was created more than it will on how good your speakers are. If you rip the original .cda file to an .mp3 @ 96~128 kb/s then likely they won't sound great no matter how good your speakers are.

+1 on the mp3 bitrate. I've got my iPod hooked up to my Alpine CDA-9835 with their kca-420i adapter and can tell instantly when a track is below 256. 256 is the minimum I'd say for an mp3 to be near cd quality, even with the Media Expander on.
