MP3Gain and SQ

Learned a valuable lesson this weekend. I've been a fan of using MP3Gain to normalize the volume of my tracks over the past 6-7 years. I've tried various gain positions from 89db all the way up to 95 and, consistently, have noticed how effed up the SQ gets after gain adjusting. Especially in the midrange.

Now I have to wait for it to revert over 300GB of music in hopes that it's salvageable. Already re-ripping everything at the same time.

Anyone else notice this phenomena?

Gives me a chance to get everything up to 320, I guess. Improvement is already immediate for me. Noticing a lot more separation and space in my tracks, even with friggin' Blink-182 and I thought they didn't give two shits about production

Waiting on a good double din that takes it. For the stuff I don't have discs for anymore, I've been downloading EAC FLAC rips and converting them over. On my external I have a crudton of 24/96 vinyl rips for when I really need some serious listening

If SS could ever get wise and release those INGENIX HUs and put FLAC support on those, they'd dominate the market.

i havent noticed much SQ loss with the MP3gain program. and i have yet to find another free program that does what it does as well as it does.(that sentance is so fucked, but IDC right now) im looking for another program because i have seen bad reviews on it, but so far i keep going back to MP3gain.

It's a great all-in-one, I'll give you that and I love how you can just set it and forget it. I figure I can just sukk it up and dial the volume up or down a couple notches if necessary, but it was just starting to get annoying how everything kinda sounded anemic. MP3Gain ended up being castration for the soul in my tunes. But, like I said, some of that stuff's been ripped off of old versions of LAME, from iTunes, downloaded from god-knows-where. It's nice to do a little housekeeping.

why i use a carpc coupled with a eclipse cd5030 lol
Nice. In my searching, I found a custom remaster of Tool's Opiate. It'll be nice to put that together with my CDrip and see what the differences are

Serious listening? I have Opiate on vinyl, technics 1210, krk monitors, and sennheiser headphones. I have lateralus special edition too vinyl. the real thing, not rips!
Sweet deal. Hoping to snag a copy of Lateralus. Already have Undertow and Opiate along with a few other goodies. Think I'm up to about 1300 on the vinyl collection. I use an ATLP120 with a Shure M97Xe cart and my Denon AHD6000s for personal listening or Pio BS21s for parties.

Don't ever get rid of that Technics, those things are bulletproof.

there's a picture of my setup in the home setups. forgot to mention the 2 12" advent cabs and 4 AA 6.75" speakers. check it out, you'll appreciate it. it's housed in an RCA phonograph cabinet. My music collection is mostly dark psytrance. I have to get 320k at best because my internet connection out in the country blows. I have undertow on vinyl too. disgustipated is the entire side of one record. I have seen one copy of aenima for sale but was $400+. One day I will have it, on vinyl.

They'll remaster the whole discog and rerelease it. How I got all the Incubus albums this year. Original pressings are the hard ones to come by (something only us stinkin' vinylheads will care about I guess).

It's funny you mention psytrance as that's how I got into Infected Mushroom (who ROCKED Escape From Wonderland IMHO). I've been all over the place when it comes to electronic music.

I know my setup is modest. I'll eventually step up to some true cabs and a VPI Scoutmaster, but can't due to having no space at all in this condo. At least that's one habit my wife supports. I take her bin hunting about once every couple months. She normally finds great stuff, but we do have a picture disc of Lady Gaga's Fame Monster that has me wondering sometimes...

You are out west, go check out Goa Gil sometime. I went to one of his outdoors and had a wonderful time. played some great f'n tunes. I haven't listened to IM since 2003ish. I saw Dark Whisper this year and Invid Mind as well. both had a great sound, omg I want to go back.. DW was amazing and it was his only usa appearance that i know of. invid mind is from argentina and my friends flew her in for the show!

Sounds like a blast, man. I'll keep my eye open for GG
