btw i do agree what the hell do we need a month for we live in america most of our history happened here and should there fore be considered american history...also i dont feel like we should be considered "african" american since a hell of alot of us are not from anywhere near africa we just happened to have dark skin like them take me for instance my entire family is from the carribean and yet im "african" american?

Its funny how the only races that are called "xxx-american" are the non-white ones

mexican-american
native-american.
But yet, white people are from pretty much every country on the globe, but are not referred to as such? Makes no sense. I don't see anyone going around and saying, "you don't like me simply because i'm german-american" or "i'm oppresed because i'm russian-american"
It's stupid. These people are born in america, raised in american families and cultures, their parents were born in america, in some cases their parents, and yet they are still referred to as "african-american"? I have some friends whose parents were not born in america, but i don't go around referring to them as "croatian-american". There's no reason for that.
Black, white, brown, yellow. If you're in america, you're american. Except for the mexicans......

The one thing that sucks about this and any other black organization associated with this is that it will never go away.
You have 2 channels that black people own . One is BET and the other is well i dont know the name of the station but it is channel 5 where is live, i know that is no help and i appologize.
In my senior year i had to write a paper over the stereotypes that americans have on african americans. I thought the paper was totally stupid but i went through and typed it out stating the usual - African Americans are hostile and are thought to deal with drugs a lot.
Through out the paper I kept thinking why am I calling them African Americans?
I changed everyone to Americans, it was hilarious because my teacher asked me why i would do something like that. I responded are they American and he said yes, i go there you go. WE talked but i wouldnt change it, If all white people are americans then all people of different colored skins are americans. One sentence said.... One main stereotype of Americans is that they grow up in the ghetto which eventually leads to the dealing and use of drugs and drug parifanali (sp?).
Anyways its stupid they can seperate themselves and have awards, scholorships, schools, tv shows, and months dedicated to the "AFRICAN" Americans. That in itself is racist and I wish they could open their eyes!

Seriously, I don't think the majority of black people even care that much about having a black heritage month. It really doesn't change how I think in any way if we did or didn't have a month dedicated to black heritage. It's just...something to appreciate since it's there, know what I mean? Like having hair on the top of your head. I wouldn't get into the whole "why do they have a month when white people don't" discussion because I really can't defend the purpose of black heritage month....
