No, you don't understand. The fact that it is stronger has NOTHING to do with car audio construction. Any box, of any size, whether it be MDF or plywood will require the same bracing no matter what. You will NEVER see the strength advantages in car audio construction. Home audio is a different story, and then, you don't use that type of plywood (13 ply which runs ~60-90 dollars). You are throwing away money, I don't see why people can't realize that.
There is $1 difference between mdf and birch. Birch runs me about $3 and mdf around $2. I buy broken pieces from work.

The main reason for choosing birch is because I wanted stain and see what it was like. Within 2 months, this box will find it's way to the woodpile.

I would like some suggestions on how to get the stain on smoother and why it come it in some places like it did.

I am not as serious about this as some others are. I just participate in this hobby to past the time and I enjoy building things. I do appreicate your criticism though. It keeps me from being arrogant.

Excuse my prior harshness, I get frustrated easily. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

What I was trying to say beneath it all is that if you want to stain, you're using the wrong type of wood. If that birch costs you only 1 dollar more, it's definitely not the right type. Get some 13 ply birch from a cabinetry shop, even oak or pine works well. It's what nice end tables and cabinets are made out of. When you stain that, it looks beautiful. Slap some poly or shellac on top and you're golden.

This runs about $39 in the stores but I get what you are saying.

The staining didn't look as it should because the wood is of low quality. But I kinda like the way it looks though.

My woodworking skills definietly do not warrent me spending $50 on a sheet of 13ply.

It also makes a huge difference to sand it down before finishing. There are always small scratches even from sliding the wood on the table saw that can't be seen. Sometimes a sanding sealer brings them out prior to final sanding as well.

lol, mossman. Is that a water based stain?
