Morel Ultimo subs, Aliante, IDQ, Brahma... SQ!

I have been doing my research on some nice SQ subs for my G35 sedan, right now I have a set of Focal K2P's up front Morel Elate 6 SW's in the back running off a JL 300/4 and Eclipse AVN5495. Sorry for going off topic right away, but I am wondering if I used a better/more powerful amplifier for my speakers since the Focals need 120w rms each and the Morels need about the same, if they would sound better/louder..?

So as of right now I have been looking at the:

:Morel Ultimo: (Can't find a place to buy) "really like this one"

:Brahma subs (Can't find a place to buy)

:phase Linear Aliante (Can't find a place to buy)

:Image Dynamics IDQ 10-D4

:Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d

:ALTO Mobile Falstaff

:Focal Utopia Be 21WX (Can't find a place to buy)

:Focal Utopia 33WX

What to buy..??? I listen to trance, and rap so I want accuracy but nothing too weak either.. And how about an amplifier reccomendation along with the subwoofer choice? Thinking about Zapco or U.S. Amps.

A single 8" is not going to have much output... unless you go with at least 3 or more, you may be dissatisfied.

On the Focal series, for sound quality, everything else being equal (which it seldom is, LOL) the kevlar cones are just as good sounding as the "W" cones... they both share the same core foam material.

Some other sound quality woofers are the PPI DCX and Critical Mass.. I think they had a review of one of their woofers in one of the mags. You can buy Critical Mass through the company... I would call and see if you could negotiate a better price over the phone.

I would consider going with 2 or more 10" subs, depending on how much output/efficiency you want and how much power you have... arguably, they tend to have more extension and are more readily available than 8", and everything else being equal, the smaller cone will be more rigid for more SPL potential. To this day, the best/flattest sounding subs I ever heard were 10"

For amps... more power/louder tends to sound better.

For a sub amp... if you are using the low-pass crossover in the amp, look for one with higher slopes, like 18 or 24db per octave, rather than the standard 12db... it help with the illusion of bass up front.

I will try A.V.E, also I am probably going with a sealed enclosure unless advised othwerwise... Thanks for the info.

Which subs would you suggest if I wanted 2x10" subs in a sealed enclosure, and an amp to run them....? Best SQ availible.

How about the Focal 27KX? 11" close enough..

I'd look for something with at least tinsel leads woven into the spider so you don't have to worry about noise from conventional leads ever slapping the backside of the cone.

There are so many subs out there now... best thing to do is look for something that has a box roll off under 50 Hz, you would have to plug the specs from different subs into a box program.

I would also look for something specifically designed for sealed boxes.

Yes, Focal has an 11", that's their ten. They are so overpriced though.

Some other thoughts... If you can find some TC Sounds with the kevlar or sandwich cones, those would be good... there was a closeout on some kevlar ones not too long ago. Also, Oz matrix are made by TC I think and have a good reputation... if they modeled well in a box program I would probably go with those myself. Finally, do some searching on DIYmobileaudio.com... the woofer they sell on the site or something from partsexpress.com could suit you.

There is even a bigger sea of amps... not much to talk about as far as sound quality there... they just amplify the signal... with amps, it's about watts per dollar, features, reliability, things like that... higher slope crossover is the main thing though. I would also buy as much power as the subs can handle (maybe more for extra headroom), and/or your electrical system can take.

I would definitely recommend sealed over ported... generally, ported trades extension for more SPL.

Are you planning on running door speakers in your trunk? These drivers you are all low Xmax (save the bramma

If you want to stick with trendy brand names, at least get a W7 (hold on JL haters, this is warranted in his case), no joke, the JL is not a bad choice here, It has huge xmax (real xmax too) and a nice high Q that works great in a small sealed box with no EQ necessary. Go for the biggest size you can afford. I would get the 13 and run it with a lot of power, but at least get the 12, the 10 is kind of anemic (as are all 10's and they really are specialty sizes for those not wanted to allocate over a cubic foot)

If you don't want JL, well there are a lot of other brands that will also work equally well, but if this is sealed, look for drivers with Q's up around 0.4+

Another name brand choice I would highly recommend in this case is the Eclipse SW8200. I would hunt down an Eclipse SW8200 and put it in a 2 cubes. They are found for cheap and they best everything on that list for low distortion (trust me my friend). I would mate it with ~800-1000 watts @ 4 ohms. If you're having a hard time finding an amp, get a pair of the 8200's - they will still cost less than that focal or even a 12W7 and you can mass balance them (side firing). You'll have about 4-8 times more linear displacement than most of that stuff and at 30Hz, you bet that will make a BIG difference. You can run the pair in parallel down to ~2 ohms

If you want to try ported and go with a totally different driver..(look for a lower Q driver) now we're talking. ported boxes decrease distortion in the lower domain and you'll get even cleaner sound, this is not well understood by most consumers that associate ported boxes with SPL, but they go hand in hand. The tricky part is making the ported box linear and using the right driver with the right tuning. This really requires modeling if your serious about a 4th order vented linear subwoofer system. I'll be happy to show you the way tho...

i owned a brahma 12 back in the day. had it sealed with 500 watts going to it. that sub was super accurate and blended very nicely with my front stage. i kind of regret selling it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

so based on my experiences i feel the new idq v3' out right some of the nicest q sub that can add some bump do to their efficiency. They were really tight and quick sub that responded excellently. I would put them up against some focals easily. and still have $$$ to spare.

As far as amps go, id give my money to noone else except jacob (sundownz = s/n) for sundown audio, or don (6spdcoupe), or dual700 o diy forums. Id wait little bit and get the sax 250.2 he is comin out with in about march. (worth the wait imo,) like all his sax and saz lines. it will be over built, on top of his nice performance they provide and backed by great customer service. i think the amp is said to do 450 x 2 @ 2 ohms i believe or 1000 @ 4 ohms bridged, either are great option of ohm load to run at, This amp paird with 2 of the new idq 10" v3's should be a nice sounding substage by far!!!!!!. and the 2 10" subs provide sufficient cone area while retaining great efficiency to pack a nice punch. I will be doing this combo.

but if u wanted a amp to buy soon and dont want to wait id still go 2 idq 10" v3's off of an audison lrx 2.500 amp u can get from 6spdcoupe on here or some ultimate series dls amps all are a/b and will sound great off the idq's
