Lars Ulrich Fine with Metallica Album Leak

By Eliot Van Buskirk lSeptember 04, 2008 | 8:03:56

Death Magnetic, the Metallica album that's slated for a September 12 release, was apparently leaked by a music store in Paris that started selling the album yesterday morning. Of course, the few shoppers that managed to snag the disc encoded them into MP3s, and now they're zinging around the internet. (The screenshot to the right from The Pirate Bay shows about 60 search results for the album.)

But rather than the tantrum fans have come to expect, Lars Ulrich issued a remarkably zen statement about the leak.

"Listen, we're ten days from release. I mean, from here, we're golden," he told San Francisco's Live 105. "If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. Ten days out and it hasn't quote-unquote fallen off the truck yet? Everybody's happy. It's 2008 and it's part of how it is these days, so it's fine. We're happy."

Who are you and what have you done with Lars Ulrich? It looks like Metallica's therapy sessions did some good. It also probably helped that the leak was attributed to a CD store, rather than a blogger or some poor knucklehead within Metallica's camp.

One track from the album, "Cyanide," is available for streaming on Metallica.com and is already available on the iTunes store (iTunes link).

Got to listen to this album in its entirety tonight. I gotta say, its there best offering since teh Black album. Not that into it lyrically yet but musically, man that brings me back. Closed my eyes and it really felt like teh 80's again.

Just for shits and giggles, rate teh albums. 5*

Kill'em....3.5

RtL....4.0

MoP....4.0

AJFA.....4.5

Black...4.5 Even though it was different, it was still teh shit.

Load....3.0

ReLoad...2.5

Garage....1.5

S&M......4.0

St. Anger.....1.0

Death Magnetic...So far, its a 4.25

I picked it up today. Right now it's sitting....around And Justice and the Black Album. Not quite there with the lyrics yet, but musically it's up there. My only complaint is at times it seems the songs kind of just...keep going.

I attribute that to me not listening to Metallica in a long *** time. One of my favorites, but I've been exploring all kinds of styles and bands recently. All of which tend to have songs >3 minutes on average.

And I guess I was one of the few who thought that if Load/Reload had been combined into one album, with the good songs only, would have been fantastic. Definitely a change from their thrashing days, but still **** good songs musically and lyrically.

Plus, have you seen older bands trying to be heavy still? Megadeth was depressing to see live. Slayer still had it. *shrug*. They were what, 20-23 when they wrote Kill 'Em All? The bands that have changed over the years are the ones who stay around.
