No, bass boost boosts a certain frequency. What the MaxxBass unit does it take a bass frequency and produce it an octave higher. Say, for example, you have a 40hz tone. The maxxbass will reproduce that tone at 80hz (one octave higher than 40hz).

The first time you hear abut MaxxBass you will be skeptical, I was too. You must hear this thing working before passing judgment.

They explain really well how this works on their http://www.maxx.com site. Very interesting topic called Psychacoustics and the phenomena of the missing fundamental.
