Yet you just made my point. The gov't passess certain laws as a preemptive move to avoid problems that could arise from certain actions/activities.

What don't you understand ? Laws that are made, which prohibit an activity that harms NO ONE but the person doing the activity, have no place in the US. I agree with wErd on the speeding law - it's there because you CAN hurt others rather easily as a result of speeding. But I disagree with the seatbelts, it's only hurting the driver, and therefore shouldn't be a law.

Individual rights should trump FORCED individual safety. Why should someone tell me what's safe and right for me ? That includes gay marriage, ************, etc. Those aren't to protect people, they are merely pushing majority beliefs on the minority. Hell, I remember reading about how America was founded based on individual rights, you know, the Pilgrams being minorities persecuted in their own country. Again, gov't takes preemptive moves to aid in individuals protecting themselves and those around them from potentially dangerous activities and actions, and actions that deteriorate the society at large. That's their job, that's what you elect them to do, that has always been their job.

Your inability to legally smoke dope is in no way, shape, or form infringing upon your rights as a US citizen. You are not oppressed or held down in any way because you can't legally partake in such activity.
