Loudest 10"

Ok... Ill gladly make an even hung sub, zero Xmax by the "classic" Xmax formula, that will get plenty "loud".Xmax isnt the end all be all of "loud".
I bet you wont. and if you do i bet you will use video tricks to make it seem loud like putting an 06 XXX in there forreal and not videoing it and then when people go to see it in real life i bet you use the old isobaric trick so it looks like its the 0 xmax sub that is making the loudness. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

****. Thanks for the idea. Now let me just drive over to Pixar and have them get started on that one.

Im not exactly sure how to make the "loudness", but I can glue stuff together and make it sound neat. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

you are correct in that xmax does not equal overall output

It however does play a massive role in the lower octaves where much more swept volume is necessary to achieve a certain SPL.

110db SPL at 80Hz for a monopole speaker requires 375 cm^3 of volume displacement, 1500cm^3 @ 40hz and 6000cm^3 @ 20hz

Undercoverpunk... Yes, I do recognize a joke when I see one. David wouldnt have been that "subtle" though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Did I ever send you a tracker for that basket?

Thadman... True. Especially in a monopole situation where it as all about excursion (simple 4 times excursion for every octave lower) But in many SPL applications where you are playing 78 Hz and having the port move the air, phenominal Xmax numbers takes a back seat to motor force (and its ability to resist the coils induced field under high power) and good old durability. Xmax is application driven more than anything.

in SQ situations where you want your sub to blend well and dig deep, xmax is one of the biggest factors, but not in ONE note SPL competitions.

Nah, don't worry about it. It'll get here when it does.

idqs have less xmax than about any of these drivers . digging in low and blending and being linear to the rest of the sound system xmax means very little. getting low and loud in a small sealed box though xmax means more but with very little to do with sq

Audiolife... So you are saying that using a sub outside of its linear range aids in blending the bass/front stage?

IDQs do have a short Xmax, but they have a little higher sensitvity than most subs do as well. Loose a little in 1 area, but gain some back in another. But that really only goes so far.

I definitely have to disagree with Xmax having little do do with SQ. Using a decently accepted value of 70% rest Bl as the definition of Xmag, you will notice that a driver with a qts of .3 will have almost doubled by the time you reach the 70% mark.

Looking at it like this... you designed your enclosure based off of the T/S small signal params and the .3 Qts. Think it will sound a wee bit different in that same box once the qts reaches .58? Yep. Will it sound like crap? Probably not as it is what most people are used to hearing... but it sure isnt linear. Part of the reason why people think extreme linearity subs sound so bland... they dont have the rising qts vs power and excursion that people have heard since the dawn of speakers.
