You guys are all nuts if you think any mainstream rapper is the best. Any music you hear on the radio, mtv, or in a dance club is not true hip-hop. You can keep listening to your microwave music and ringtone rappers, but true hip-hop has nothing to do with riding on 24's, dropping it like it's hot, spining like a cyclone, getting hyphy, stupid, or dumb, licking lolipops, or any of that s**t. True rappers tell stories and don't care about album sales or the bling they have on their neck. There is a big difference between the hip-hop you hear on the radio and true hip-hop. A few artists who most of you probably have never heard of that will blow weezy out of the water are:

Brotha Ali

KRS-One

Pharacyde

Atmosphere

Dialated

Jedi Mind Tricks

Immortal Technique

PH is a good friend of mine, we've known each other for about 12 years now...I've worked with dude a few times in that period, before the Will Tell, Scheme Team days, back when he was Zulu Nation and what not, and then during 1st testament and then afterward, the last time I worked with him was on the park slope mixtape around the later part of 04...we keep in touch, but i really dont do any production anymore, with the family and a real job, it's hard...i still make beats here and there, and will probably never stop, but the time just isnt there anymore now that i'm pushing 30, things change...i've made beats for quite a few dudes out there...

when an emcee spits into a mic, is he hip hopping or rapping? when you break dance, are you a rapper? no you are a breaker, and breaking is part of....Hip Hop...rapping is a subset of Hip Hop, just one of the 4 (or 5) elements as you pointed out...Hip Hop is a culture, a style, an art form...a rapper can make Hip Hop music, because it's a style of music...Hip Hop is everything associated with it...
so, rap is something you do, hip hop is something you live...if you aren't familiar with this statement, than there is no real use in having the discussion about the subject...

it's almost like saying r&b is a element of hip-hop.
