Well if you are going to get techinical about this, you shoudl refer to not the "internet" but the "world wide web". An internet is any publicly accessable networking between computers, while intranet is the same, but only privately accessable.

Internet and intranet came about at the same time btw, all networking stuff, the difference is access, and intranet doesnt always use the same standard IP (internet protocol) as the internet does.

Ok..? It still came before. I don't know what you're getting at if you need help with it you can think of it like roads. We didn't have interstate highways before we had innerstate highways (intrastates).

that analogy doesnt work, internet and intranet require the same technology, internet just using a universal standart protocol, while intranet doesnt. intranet doesnt mean contained in one building or something, it just means contained in a closed network... could span the globe, but is not open to the public.

intranet is a private internal network (like the one at a business). Internally-accessible-only web-pages, file shares, network printers, etc. are on the intranet.

The Internet is the "publicly accessible" web.

And, yes, there were news groups/usenet before there was the "Internet"/World Wide Web... and they still exist on what is now the Internet, in full-force.
