Kicker ZX amps and High voltage pre-outs??? Bad idea?

I have the eclipse cd4000 w/ 5v preouts and Kicker ZX650.4 & 750.1. I'm starting to get extremely bad clipping once my system has been on for a few tracks and its only getting worse. the clipping is mainly coming from my comps, so bad that i cant hear any music.

Is this from the 5v preouts since kicker specs only up to 5v low level inputs? or is this my HU thats bad? cross overs for the comps bad? im leaning toward the eclipse clipping/burning my 650.4.

First of all, clipping refers to the shape of the waveform, not to the sound your speakers make. If you clip the singnal you may or may not even be able to hear it. Read more here---> www.bcae1.com

Second of all, you won't get 5v out of that deck unless you crank the volume to max and you play a sine wave.

Third, what is the imput sensitivity on the amp?? I have none of your issues and the imput sensitivity on my amps is 7v and I deliver 10-14v to it regularly.

Have you properly set the gains on the amp???

I really doubt it's the deck or the passive x-overs inducing the noise you describe. You need to be more specific about your problem too. Does this only happen at loud volumes? Does it happen all the time??

ok well regardless what clipping does/doesnt sound like, this sounds like extreme distortion. you can basically hear the woofers going max excursion.

I know i wont see 5v out of that HU. i listen torock/rap with the volume was about 46 on a scale of 60+(not too loud).

input sens. on the ZX650.4 is upto 5v. How in the hell do you give your amp 10-14v signal?

Its tough to be much more specific when i dont know wht is causing it. It does it now all the time. Its gotten worse over the past 2 days. first time it did it for approx 2sec. and stopped. next time 15sec, next time 30+sec since i could not find the remote to turn it off. Now it does it all the time once i turn it on for a few secs.

when it does it, you can smell something burning as i stated in my 2nd post.

Does anyone have any ideas? Polecat, you didnt have much to say i was hoping you being the kicker expert would have a lil more to say???

no i have not set the gains according to the gain tutorial since im not finished everything yet but the gain is only below 1/2

jeez re set ur gains wt a dmm
i said im not even done my install yet so i just need music in the meantime. i will deffinately set it w/ my dmm once im finished and tuning everything

but thats what i was thinking that i have a bad amp.

Tuning involves SETTING YOUR GAINS WITH A DMM FIRST... jackass.
Then you can fine tune it.

no shyt, hence why i said i havnt even tuned it yet. bottom line my gain setting is not the root of my problems; the ss comps are rated 85w but polecat said they need more like 125w+, well what do you know the 650 puts out 125w/ch and even with a higher input voltage and gain under 1/2 im by far babying the amp.

looks like foxpro is the most help here everyone else just wants to jump down my **** neck for some reason

Gain under 1/2 with a high voltage input, I'd guess you're pushing the poop out of it. Gain, when properly set, will probably be around 25% of full.

Several people have mentioned this, and you still don't get it.

THE GAIN IS NOT A VOLUME CONTROL. IT IS A LEVEL MATCHING DEVICE

Many people with high voltage HUs run their gains ALL THE WAY DOWN.
