Kenwood X993 and Zune questions...

I am attempting to use a Zune through the aux-in jack of a X993 HU. The installer ran patch cords from the back of the HU to dash face for both the usb and aux-in plugs.

Reading the manual I have been using the source button and going into "standby" mode. I then use the function button and go to "menu", then scroll to "aux-off" and right toggle to change to "aux-on". Then I go back up to the "source" button and take off standby and put on aux. I get no sound at all through the speakers.

I really think the manual is quite vague on this but there is mention of naming the "source" though I was not able to figure out how to do it on the HU.

Apreciate any help...The wife loves her Zune.

try it with the aux off. idk. what kind of patch cable?Mine has rca as aux in. I run my tv thru it with the source as aux, but it will display cd changer..
We did have the zune hooked-up while switching back and forth between aux off and on. I question the patch cord...

never used the aux on mine but i bet that is the case. could be a bad cord or bad connection to the hu (not plugged in).

nineball...Do you know if one method is prefered over the other for sound quality (RCA's vs Aux-in)?

edzy...The zunes output is 3.5mm or what I believe to be the same as a headphone plug. I have several and they all seem to be interchangeable.

The installing outfit left alot to be desired as I have some hacked up stuff I am not real happy about. I would be embarrased to take pictures...it makes me sick.

Hmm...I just tried a Discman with the 3.5mm cable I have and setting the HU for aux input and still nothing.

edzy...before I purchased the Kenwood I talked to Kenwoods technical service. I was under the impresion the 3.5mm jack on the back of the 993 was an integrated aux-in jack and no need to go through the RCA's.

Am I all wet here?

well, looking at the pdf, it shows that 3.5 as a aux input or a mic.. and it is hard wired into the HU. So if it it not working then its either a bad setting on the HU or a problem with the hu or the zune. If you bought it authorized new, it should be under the 2 year warranty.

And what is this patch cable? why do you need a patch cable? is the whip off the hu short? and is the 3.5 aux from the hu stereo or mono? and is the patch cable stereo or mono? and i assume the zune is stereo out? that may make a diff. If you use that patch cable and zune can you connect it to anything elas and get it to play? such as home stereo or something?

I would ONE make sure they didn't plug the "Aux" cable into the "Mic" input. Second, go buy your own 3.5--->3.5 mini plug cable.

Looks like this:

Third, make sure it's plugged into the "Aux" input. The Aux input is FLUSH with the housing. The Mic input is a small cable, about 3 inches long, coming out of the housing.

Fourth, turn up the volume on your Zune to about 3/4.

Forgot to tell ya. Turn AUX to ON

First...Thank you edzy for your time and those links. After talking with technical support this morning they saw nothing I was doing wrong and would also question the installers patch cord/connection. They also felt it was a clearer sound path to use the integrated 3.5mm aux-in vs other port combos. There is both an aux-in and a mic jack. The patch cord was simply to make the aux-in jack accesible to the front of the dash.

m2002 Brian...The Bluetooth is hooked up and is working. I would hope that shows it is wired correctly into the mic pig tail. We did experiment with volume levels and confirmed aux-on several times by flipping the Aux-in off/on.

Seems the only logical choice is to pull the HU. Get a known patch cord as recomended and perform some direct connect test. The HU exhibits times where the right knob requires a subtantial amount of inward pressure to make a connection when desired for navigation choices. Is this common?

Thanks for everyones time.

The 3.5mm patch cord was disconencted from the back of the HU. I spent a few minutes learning to remove the dash bezel and the HU myself and found it. The installer left very little excess in the patch cords length making the hook-up difficult. Here is a photo showing the back of the HU and the unplugged aux-in patch cord. Feel free to comment if something does not look like up to par.
