Kenwood KDC-BT31 illumination questions

I have a Kenwood KDC-BT31 and it does not have an illumination wire. This wouldn't be a concern for me but the standard screen is incredibly dark. During the day I can't see it. At night its not so bad but it is impossible to read during the day. I've turned the dimmer function off, brightness all the way up and nothing seems to work. However if I click the function button to activate the menu that is super bright and awesome. Any ideas why I can't get the standard to be that bright? Thanks for your help guys.
