Kenwood Excelon 8120 Working 10% of the Time

Hey Car Audio Community,

I tried running a search on the forums for my stereo but couldn't really find any trouble shooting or other people with my dilemma.

I just bought a used Jeep Wrangler Unlimted 09 Rubicon. The stereo is an after market Kenwood Excelon 8120 Working 10% of the Time. When I test drove the car originally it didn't work. On my way home after purchasing the vehicle it came on for about 20 minutes and then went out again. Since then it usually does not work but occasionally it will turn on.

I checked the leads behind the system with a multi meter and it is receiving consistent power so I didnt explore the engine and the fuses their much more. i checked the fuse behind the radio (even though it worked occasionally indicating it should not be broken) and the fuse was fine.

I am at a bit of a loss for what to check or do. I called my local "bestbuy" and they want 25$ for every 15 minutes they are in my car. For that cost I would rather just buy a new stereo and install it from scratch so that I know it is right. Has any one worked with this model before though and could give me some tips?

I had that unit a few years ago.

It did the same thing to me.

Try pushing up on the bottom button tray.

After 2 or 3 months of that, I just bought a new head unit .

Sounds like an internal power supply issue. New head units are relatively inexpensive compared to fixing a broken one. Buy a new one and be done with it.

I'm assuming the head unit is the display portion of the unit? Why would that cause it to not work? I'm thinking this weekend of just taking the whole thing out and hooking it up to a battery to trouble shoot thins. Or is there a better option. Thanks for the responses

I just tried pushing up on it and it pushed the bottom of the unit in and the top out a little. Sort of as if it is about to open for a cd. But still no luck turning on.
