Kenwood DNX8130 Updating GPS maps

I have been trying to connect to my Kenwood DNX8130 from its external USB but my Windows computer does not seem to recognize it. I am using the Mapsource software to detect my receiver but it does not find it. Could it be my installation did not connect the USB properly? I have my iPOD connected and it works but I am curious about the other USB. Can I diagnose myself what is going on that I cannot get my Windows to recognize? One thought it that the external USB is looking for .mp3 files only.
