keeps fryin fuses

well me and my brother just switched tv for his system. so now i have a 13w7 in the sealed box and the jl 1000/1 amp. i have it in a 2000 ford taurus with the duratec. it has a 130 amp stock alternater. i currenty have a 4 gauge wire kit installed and have a in line fuse holder with 80 amp fuses in it. when i turn the amp up a little more than 1/4 it blows the fuse. i was wondering if i need the other type of fuse. i think i found a good one(http://cgi.ebay.com/EFX-0-1-GAUGE-DIGITAL-ANL-FUSE-HOLDER-W-200-AMP-FUSE_W0QQitemZ330017115192QQihZ014QQcategoryZ50551QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) now i think its only for 0 gauge wires. but should i be looking in this direction or what?. and should i buy a new HO alternater or buy another battery. i was told a yellow top. and now would i want to keep the battery i got now in the engine compartment and get yellow top battery and put it in the trunk? and how hard and is that too do?

sry for all the questions..thx

the fuse under the hood by the battery is not to protect the amp, but to protect the wire coming off the battery in case it ever got cut somehow and arced, the fuse would pop. i would imagine that your amp has a built in fuse, right? if it does, that's what protects the amp and you would be ok in simply swapping the fuse for a larger one. i don't see a reason to get a new holder and all that. just get a few larger fuses (100a, 120a, 140a, 160a) they are only a few$$ each.

to install a battery in the trunk just connect the two + together and ground it somewhere in the trunk. like i talked about before with the fuse thing, for the battery protection, you will want two fuses on the + wire, one at each battery to protect it from either direction.

you probably have a short and its just touching something only when you shake it at loud volume.. go down your power line to your amp (all the way from your hood) and make sure its not cut or crimped anywhere down it..

I doubt thats the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

More than likely the amp is just over drawing the fuse. you can safely up the amperage on the fuse to 150a.

Per JL's manual, you need a 100A Fuse for the 1000/1, the amp if loaded down will draw more then the fuse you have installed will allow.

And "turning up" the amp is not what that knob does, please read Appendix B of your manual. That setting is dependent of the input voltage of your RCA's. Meaning if you have 1V of input you need to turn that dial about 3/4 to get full output (on Low). If you have 4V output, half gain on "high" would be accurate to getting full power with your source unit at 3/4 volume. The lower the gain, the better off you are with signal to noise ration = cleaner output, thus the benefits of higher RCA output

BTW - that holder will work with 4 gauge as well, if using 4 gauge you can look into MIDI Inline Fuse holders as well, those are smaller versions of ANL fuses and come in a range of 30-150A so it would fit your application well.

Speaking from experience a crimp in the power wire is definite problem...especially if it gets wet. I remember coming out to a car full with white smoke and a completely melted 8gauge power wire...ened up cuttin power wire from battery asap. Of course thats what I got from running a power wire though my driver door area lol....was a few years back on my first install.
