pretty much the crossovers/tuning and the colorful animations is what sets apart the 589 and the 889. thats it, oh and the G-analyzer. For simple operations, i would go with the 589

I would think the methods of operation would be identical on the X889 and the Anny. Ed. unit. That's not where the differences lie.
Once the EQ, crossover, etc settings are made it's not hard to access the sub volume control, balance, & fadar...and the station presets are but one button push to get to while in tuner mode. How much else would the wife want to adjust? Is she going to want to change the EQ and crossover settings? (this ma y be a dumb question...I don't know how much or how little your wife cares about the tunes...)
