JL 12w7: How to test voice coil

So I have a friend in another state that saw a JL 12W7 (newer model) at a thrift shop and bought it for $30. It has a small nick on the cone which is just cosmetic. He's gonna send it to me because he has no use for it, but I don't even know if its worth it to ship it if it isn't working. He says he pushed on the cone and feels no rubbing and he can't hear a thing. How should I have him test it? Will a 9volt battery work fine? Try it on each coil and if it pops it should be good? Maybe a multimeter?

Let me know. He'd be giving it to me for free (he owes me a few $$$), but I'd pay for shipping which is probably like $40. Ideally I'd like to hear the difference between the 12W7 and my Audioque HDC312 and ultimately sell one, or use one as a home theater woofer. What do you guys think? Worth it?

Its only a SVC. Put a DMM on the coil and it should read around 3ohm. It the crack goes through the dust cap it will leak

Thanks @DDtc you've been so helpful to all my questions recently! Here's a pic of the damage. I know I can fix it relatively easily as it doesn't seem to be too big. It's happened before to my subs and I can usually fix it with some glue and a patch. I can't really go wrong with a $40 12W7. Thanks again.

Yes use a ddm and measure resistance at the terminals. W7 and HDC are 2 very different Subs to say the least.
I definitely know they are very different, which is why I'd love to see what the difference is especially in my car. I may enjoy one over the other in which case I will sell one. Either way, I'm getting a $400 sub for $40 in shipping costs which ain't too bad.

No its definitely good deal for you. I would personally keep the W7 all day over the HDC
Considering I just got a pair of Focal Power K2 165KFs for free this week with crossovers (and no tweeters), I'd say I'm having a pretty good week haha. I'll see how that JL sounds and will report back, if he can get it to pop or DMM it properly.
