I've got 800 watts: one sub or two?

I've got an old Rockford amp. It puts out 800x1 @ 4 ohms. Would I be better off with one sub running 800 watts rms or two subs running 400 watts rms each. For the sake of this argument, lets assume that they are 12" subs, and it will be the same kind of sub either way. I.e. one brahma or two brahmas, one power hx2 or two power hx2s, one L7 or two L7s. Would two subs give a higher spl than one sub?

I don't want this to become a battle of the brands. So you can imagine this with whatever brand you want.

Thanks

now i would suggest a sub for you that hasn't been talked about much on this forum for the past 2 months or so. the blueprint drivers i have no idea what happened to the company but i know they used to make a 1203 and it was a single 4 ohm sub that could handle 1000watts rms. so i'd look into that one.

Well i run one in a 2000 Civic Si and thats all i need but thats just me. If you want to 12 with that kind of power i would look in the RE SE line or ED K line both really good subs for the price and the power that you have.
