Its official.

I'll be glad to spell out my point more directly, then. A few people here are crying censorship, yet those opinions are not being censored. One word is. One word. One word that is almost universally considered offensive. Ive asked, more than once, for a reason why some people here feel the need to use this word to express themselves, yet Ive received not one single answer beyond 'because I want to'. We all face rules we dont necessarily agree with, every day. Part of being mature is realizing life is a set of compromises for the good of everyone. Again, Ive given ample opportunity for people to express why their need to use this word outweighs the negativity it portrays to other members. The only response is that their need to use the word outweighs the views of other people here.

Dan wants everyone to believe 'trolling' is now a bannable offense. He wants everyone to believe the mod staff expects everyone to play nice. The truth is trolling is not bannable, as proven by Dan trolling by creating this thread. I bet if we knew the truth, Dan doesn't even really care, he simply has to be on the cusp of a hot topic here. He can continue trolling, he just wont be doing it while using the word Goob has made this rule about. Everything else is just crying, and trolling.

Cheers.

I guess when you become mod your sense of humor gets removed.
My sense of humor is exactly the same. What HAS changed is Im now forced to be in the middle of situations like this, and enforce rules laid out by the site owner. If you cannot understand the difficulty this sometimes creates, that's just you being naive.

Let me spell it out for you, Dan. Im not offended by the word. But like you, Im not black nor does it portray myself personally in a negative light. I have enough respect for others' views however to realize just because *I* am not offended, doesn't make it right.

Censorship would be deleting all threads that have opinions in them that do not agree with this new rule. As you can see, that is not happening.

And Id let you!

banning books leads to book burnings. i kno u mean well an all.... but, wats gonna get burned if you ban the n-word?
I understand this thought process, but the opposite problem cannot be ignored either. The opposite being people are allowed to say any hateful, disrespectful, vile thing they can think of. Lets face it, the anonymity of the internet makes saying those types of things easier, sometimes much too easy. I dont want to stifle people's ability to express themselves, but I also dont want people to feel they can say any hateful thing they want with no other intention than to incite anger. The roll of moderators, on any site, is to maintain some sort of balance here. If you (anyone, not you faulkton) dont agree with the balance struck here, I understand and respect that. But to refuse to see the other side of the argument (again, not you faulk), is simply being unreasonable. Having to make these decisions is not easy, its a matter of trying to upset the fewest people possible, while knowing some people will be upset no matter what decision is made.

Again, Im not personally offended by the term, but i still see this as a clear cut example of needing to draw the line. If you want to use the term to express friendship, then it should be easy to find a less volatile term to express your positive meaning. And if you use the term to express a less respectful meaning, then that merely reinforces the need to ask that the word not be used here. I nor any other mod here wants to keep people from expressing friendship, we just want people to find a more constructive, less destructive, way of doing so. To me, that is not unreasonable. And its certainly not us just trying to push our weight around to censor people just because we can. If anyone cant understand that, its because they just aren't trying to understand.

Dan, if you have any constructive addition to the discussion, besides simply trying to bait me into a petty e-argument, I'll be glad to respond. Otherwise, I'll simply file your comments away as petty trolling. I like you, we've gotten along well over the years. But that doesn't mean I wont speak up when I disagree with you on this topic. If that bothers you, sorry, but Im not in the position to let it go, being as I accepted this role as moderator. I hope you understand that.

Holic I think your going way too far into this. It shouldn't be your job to defend Goob's decisions, if you want to post a new rule just make a new thread with the rule and immediately lock it. I mean, it's fine to let the members discuss the rule but it seems like your taking way too much heat for something that's really not your doing.

Dont worry.... This thread will be deleted too
If you are referring to the white chicks thread, that is not fair. We made a rule, we have no option but to enforce it. If people want to push the boundaries to see how far we allow it to go, we have no choice but to step in at some point and say enough is enough. We ban the N word, so someone starts a thread suggesting some of the worst racially biased thoughts they can think of (while not actually using the banned word). Similar to what I said above, if you cant see the difficult position that puts moderators in, that's because you aren't trying to understand both sides. We have to draw lines somewhere, and apparently some people here aren't mature enough to respect that those lines MUST exist.
