Team Meyvn, a 16-and-under squad made up of a mix of Kaua‘i boys soccer players from around the island, scored a championship at the Aloha International Cup this past weekend on O‘ahu.

“We were all about the ‘W,’ Team Meyvn coach Kevin Celebrado said. “That was our theme. The boys were saying that before each game.”

Sponsored by Deli & Bread Connection, Rob’s Good Times Grill and CG Custom Prints, the team needed a final day victory under ample amounts of pressure against AC Honolulu to clinch the championship.

“We blew out the whole tournament and then on Sunday we had an early morning game and the other team ended up scoring a bum goal,” Celebrado said. “It threw us off.”

In earlier tournament action, Team Meyvn bounced WAAK of O‘ahu, 6-0, thanks to goals from Kyle Mira (2), Sheldon Costa, Keala Lovell and Micah Swain.

Then on July 21, the squad edged Corona Fire of Southern Calif., 2-0. Seth Quisel notched both scores.

On the following afternoon, the Kaua‘i contingent nudged Hawai‘i Rush of Mililani, 4-0, behind goals from Lovell (2), Sage Silverman and Costa.

Porterville United of Northern California erased Team Meyvn’s perfect record with a 1-0 win. The loss shoved the Kaua‘i boys into a second place tie with Hawai‘i Rush. Porterville stood one point above the two squads.

After witnessing a tied contest between Porterville and Hawai‘i Rush, Team Meyvn needed a victory over AC Honolulu for the title, which they accomplished to triumph in the 16-and-under division.

“It was a good feeling,” Celebrado said. “All the work came together and we realized we did the job just right. We got taken care of by the Kaua‘i people.”

Celebrado said he knew his team was stacked, but he didn’t predict a top finish.

“I expected them to do pretty good,” he said. “The team was so strong. With my luck we had a strong team. I was pretty stoked.”

Team members include Sage Silverman, Sheldon Costa, Seth Quisel, Chris Longboy, Micah Swain, Mike Fujikawa, Daniel Victor, Travis Schoniwitz, Kainoa Lemke, Pono Perez, Joey Banasihan, Micah Alayvilla, Keala Lovell, Kupa Graycochea, Kyle Mira, Noa Chun, Tyler Yee and Kelsey Gaetjens. Brad and Kevin Celebrado coached the squad.
