i would put 8s back there if you can install them properly (ie MDF baffle, deadening, and completely sealed off)...if not just remove them and let a sub vent throught the openings

if you have 12"s coming, NO dont spend money on 8"s for the rear deck, leave the stock speaker holes Open,

work on speakers for the front.

Oh yeah. You'll be happy you if you put a lot of focus on getting a great front sound stage.

You are wasting your time to do 8" speakers in the deck when you have twelves.... it won't be anywhere near a 3db gain, which is what you would need to make a noticeable difference... you won't even hear them.

All they will do is rattle the rear deck and be noise makers.

Midbass? - you want your midbass up front.

As suggested, spend your money on the front component set.

I just recently purchased a 2002 civic ex. The rear deck contains 6x9's. Im not too happy with them. Would it be a good idea to replace them with something like 2 8" subwoofers?
Has anyone done this, and was it worth it in your mind?

I was in a similar situation. I had a 4-door Escort, so that is close in size to your Civic. I messed around with all sorts of things for the rear deck, determined to make it work.

I finally ended up with some CDT 6.5" coaxials up front getting 85 watts each. I then had a single ported 8" sub in the trunk. I had that hooked to an electronic x-over with a wired remote up front. I simply removed the rear speakers and let the sub vent into the cabin. For at least 2 years it had all of the sound and bass I needed. In that small car, I just never had a need to upgrade.

I went with coaxials because I wanted minimum install effort on this vehicle. But if you can do components and a 12" sub, go for it. Just make sure that your front speakers can hang with the subs. To make sure that your frontstage can handle sufficient power and can crossover low enough to balance your sub.

Another example: I have a larger sedan. My front speakers are DEI Viper 7" components and a 12" sub in the trunk. Rear speakers removed. I ALMOST spent some money on new rear 6x9's. But now I've decided to spend that money on deadening my doors to remove rattles and I'm going to rebuild my subwoofer box. (The original is too small.)

I'm convinced that this will do more good than buying rear speakers.

I'm not anti-rear fill. I have an suv with comps up front and stock speakers for rear fill and it sounds good to me.
