Is this overkill?

Ah that makes sense now. My Tahoe I did the same thing with, since the previous owner had a small system in it and had the amps wiring next to the fusebox in the engine compartment.

Same thing in my s10.

Wonder if this is any better than straight to battery?

 
I'm confused. You plug the amp positive on the battery positive. if you plug the amp positive onto the PDC idk what would happen, it might make lights dim worse, etc.

I don't think I'm understanding what you're trying to say, sorry.

 
I upgraded the PDC because it was old and worn anyways and the bigger wire might help with voltage / resistance / lights dimming a little.
