i have a hifonics bxi2006d powering 2 12" L7's...i have the gain set right w/ a multi meter at 44 volts at 45 volume on my head unit....is it ok for me to turn my HU past that point..like to 60 volume..

i only do this on rare occasions..like when showing off or something like that...after like 5 minutes or so...the subs start to smell a bit...and the amp starts to get kinda warm..just want to know if this is ok to do sometimes...or not really.

If there is burning smell coming from your subs, I would turn it down, irregardless of your gain settings...

thats the reason that you set it with a DMM. I think any pint after that (45 volume) that your are going to start sending it a cliped signal.

depends...

some HU's clip past a certain point - which just gets you poor sound quality by exceeding the reference volume.

However, some music is recorded at less than 0dB (almost all from what I've seen) so in those cases going above ref. vol. shouldn't cause any problems as long as your HU outputs don't clip

Yea if it is starting to smell I wouldn't go that high in volumn only takes 1 good hit of clipped signal that can eventually kill the sub.
