...when the HU is sending a clipped signal? I'm using my stock HU and my last sub (S15 L7) blew because I clipped it from the HU. So is there a sure way that I can tell exactly what volume the HU send a clipped signal? Like with a device or something?

Oscilloscope, but be prepared to spend some money.

Also a stock HU usually won't have Pre-amp outputs so therfore you're not sending as clean or powerful a signal to the amp (dirty signal) and most stock HU will begin to clip at less than 50% volume.

If you have an aftermarket HU now that has Pre-amp outputs then you should read the owners manual to find the pre-amp outputs voltage (2.2v,4v,5v,8v).

The higher the pre amp output voltage the more powerful and cleaner signal you are sending to the amp(S).

ture... im using my stock deck now cause my alpine is out for repairs, and i have my gains setup to where i never have to turn the volume on the deck up past half... not sure if it helps any but just be easy with it till u get an aftermarket deck

I was planning on adding an epicenter as well. Does the epicenter do anything to the signal? Also I was doing a search, could I add a signal processor to help?

that's pointless, just get an adjustable line level converter and save your $$

you're already converting from a high-voltage signal

and if your amp has line level inputs, you're x10000 wasting your money with either of those

I have the adjustable line out convter already, but what can I use for a cleaner signal? Or does the LOC give out a cleaner signal? Also I think my stock HU has that volume based equalizer that I hear newer cars have. I heard that the JL clean sweep fixes that but I was wondering if any bass processor like the Epicenter or BX-10 eliminates the volume based equalizer since everything has to go through the bass processor first. I'm a newb so you have to bear with me on this one.

i'm sure when people talk about a volume based equilizer, they mean it functions like a 'loudness' control, where no band can ultimately cross a set output

you could correct this simply by setting your gains with the volume lower

if your bass control goes to +5, set your gains at 5 steps below max volume, etc.

same one i use, good investment
it's even got a one-touch dynamic auto-range, takes like 2 seconds to set up gains
hell yeah, thats why i like it so much //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

you can get a scope, i got this... love it http://www.elexp.com/tst_hhs5.htm
also, i wouldnt spend money on more audio stuff without getting a new deck. stock decks really really ****

Wow,that's a **** good price for an O-scope!!!

And I fully agree with stock HU's being junk.

Get yourself a nice aftermarket HU (Pioneer Premier,Alpine,Eclipse etc etc.) that has 4v or greater Pre-amp outputs and that is how you get a cleaner signal to the amp(s).

What I do is I use a 1000Hz test tone recorded at 0db's and I unplug my subs so only the components are working.

Play the 1000Hz test tone and increase the volume until you hear distortion in your component speakers and then back the volume down to the max volume before clipping occurs.

Now for the subs....(only use this method if you know the amplifiers actual output at the impedence you plan to run other wise use your ear or an o-scope).Find your subwoofers RMS rating and multiply by the impedence you will be running the subs at and then find the square root of that number and there's your voltage.Turn the HU's volume up to the max clean setting that you found and Use a 40-50Hz Testone recorded at 0db's and and set your DMM to AC volts and connect to your amplifiers speaker terminals (remember to disconnect the subs wiring from the amp before going in with the DMM).

While the car is running and the HU is turned up to he max clean level set your DMM up and turn the gains up till you reach that voltage reading

and adjust the gains till your DMM reads the proper Voltage.wire your subs bac to the amp and enjoy!

dont know if this will work for others but it worked for me

note.. was not using amp for front speakers

unhook your subs

fade out your rear speakers

unhook your right front speaker

set the balance all the way to the right

play a 1k 0db tone

turn up the volume until you hear a super high pitch sound coming from your LEFT front speaker, you can barley barley hear it, thats clipping, worked for me, i scoped it too, happend at the same exact time

strange
