Is the JL W3V3 Trim Ring Necessary?

Hi guys, I just got a sweet deal on two JL Audio 13W3V3 subwoofers. I purchased them without a box and failed to notice that the black "customizable" trim ring is missing on both of them. The W6V3 series uses a similar style ring as well. The outer ring is there, just not the octagonal piece that hides the mounting screws. I did some research and supposedly a JL dealer or JL directly might be able to sell me some. That brings me to my two questions:

1. Is the trim ring necessary to keep the surround from seperating from the basket? I know it's glued, honestly I'm not sure how much the trim ring does. Considering I have an amp capable of running these at full power, I don't want to find out the hard way.

2. Does anybody have these trim rings for sale or know where I can find them other than JL or a JL dealer?

Thanks in advance everybody!

I called JL customer service today. The lady spoke with a technical support rep and told me that he said it's mainly there for aesthetics and that the woofer can be ran without it.

Definitely not rubber, it looks like ABS. I like this grille but it does not include a trim ring. It is designed to tuck under the OEM rubber gasket.
