is it worth it?

Doubling power in theory gets you a 3db increase. So by bumping up your power by 500w to that sub, you'd get a theoretical increase of 1.5db. You need to increase output by 10db to double perceived volume.

What sub was it?

I'm not talking about doubling the perceived output. I'm talking about being able to hear the difference between amp A and amp B. I've sat in cars that've metered in the upper 148s and then sat in one that's touched a 150 and it was pretty obvious which was louder. That was only a 1.x db difference. I'm not saying by switching to a 3k amp he'll gain 1.5db, I'm saying by increasing power he "should" hear an increase in output. And the sub I'm talking about is a 10'' LV4XL

Did you know the db level prior to sitting in the vehicles?

Guess he told you Kevin //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
I've heard the diff in a 2Hz change in tuning when messing around with my RL-P's in the car.
Haha yeah. I'm just sharing my experiences here...not trying to come off as some "pro". I definitely don't know everything and I'm not trying to act like I do. I just thought by sharing a real world experience instead of most people on here who blindly throw out opinions it might help someone.

but was what you gain worth the money you spent? for the OP hes going to need the new amp and another battery. i don't think it'd be worth it.
I actually saved money. Went from a JL 1000/1 to a saz1500d.

What does frequency response have to do with db perception? Nothing.
