Is it normal for 1 amp to run cool and the other one warm?

Hi there,

I have a Dodge Ram Diesel 06 with dual batteries.

Got 4 gauge from the battery (70 amp fuse) all the way to the rear seat to a dstribution block then 4 gauge from the distribution block to the amps, an Alpine 4x75 and a Jl 1000/1.

Why does the alpine amp always runs very cool to the touch and the jl 1000/1 always runs warm to the touch, both amps are mounted on the floor under the rear seats?

The JL amp runs warm to the touch on the body and the heat dissipating metal fins on top of the amp run cooler than the body, is this normal?

I have on order a 1/0 gauge dual amp kit from kicker that will be installed next week probably if this might help...

THX in advance

sounds like the JL is a bit more inefficient, or you are just running the 4ch really easy.

heat is a byproduct of wasted energy, appears that the JL has more of it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

am I on the money here guys?

and yes the heat dissipating fins should run cooler than the body, their job is to dissipate the heat lol...

do you have them grounded to the same point or different?

yes.. just like a resistor

Im running the alpine 4 channel amp 4ohm speakers per channel and the Jl audio amp with a dual 4ohm RSD 12 set to a 2ohm load.

Th alpine amps gain is about 50% on the front 2 channels and 40% on the rear 2 channels

The Jl Audio amps gain is around 45%

NOP, but they are grounded in similar places, I will ground them to the same place next week when I get the kicker dual amp kit because it has a 0 gauge ground wire and a distribution block for the ground and will send a 4gauge wire to the amps.

Would the JL amp run cooler with the new kicker 1/0 gauge kit?
no.

they are different amps producing different amounts of power designed differently and performing different tasks. a/b i assume vs d class for starters...the fact one is more warm then the other really doesn't mean anything. grounding them at the same spot or adding 0 guage will not change the amount of heat the produce.

x2. the jl 1000/1 is not a very efficeient amp among other class d amps. the few that i have installed have ran somewhat hotter than others.

Run the alpine on a bridged two channel @ 2ohm load and see it run warmer (2x2ohm bridged). You have it on 4 channel @ 4ohm, not even a workout for it. Polo..
I got some Boston Pros waiting on install, so I will bridge the 4 channel amp o a 3ohm load...
