Is Hifonics overrated

Quick question guys I am looking for an amp to power 2 10" L7 in ported box. I was thinking of the RE12.1 but then I saw the Hifonics Brutus 1605D which says 1600 watts x 1 @ 1ohm for about $225 @ ike sound. Just wanted to know if it is worth the savings and if you guys think it will put out around that much power or is it very overrated.

They are over rated, according to most. Many benches show the Brutus line doing up to ~500w less than their rated power... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Brutus also has some reliability issues.

Not sure of the 1605d but if its anything like the 1500d it is overrated by afew hundred watts. (about 200-300 if I remember correctly)

well if youve got the money, go with the 12.1

Be easy on the gain (dont set it to put out 1600w... ) and it should be fine. There are other choices out there, however...

For the same price you can find a refurbished Planet Audio 2250D and those are not over rated.

Yes... It will do its rated power of 2250w @ 1 ohm, however I wouldnt set the gain to put out ~1800w or so, just to be on the safe side.

No, Planet Audio rates their amplifiers for 1 ohm by stating max power. It IS however the RMS rating. By MAX, they are simply saying the highest amount of continuous output at the lowest impedance possible. The birthsheet from my PA 1250D said 1275w RMS @ 1 ohm with 14.4v input IIRC.
