According to Crutchfield, the 5th/6th Gen Nano WILL NOT charge without using this adapter:

Alpine KCX-422TR Charges your iPod® touch or iPod nano while connected to select Alpine receivers at Crutchfield.com

Apple changed the charging pinout in the plug, requiring the adapter.

The Nano shown is NOT a 5th or a 6th Gen. I know, I have both. The screen on the one shown is smaller, and the control pad is higher up on the body.
