ipod or iriver or other??

hi guys. well this would be my first time buying a product such as these, and i was wondering if i could get some opinions. now i have a non-mp3 pioneer deck, a older model, but if was to get a protable player such as these, i would use the adapter and rca/pin cables to connect it to my head unit. thing is,

when u connect it to the "Aux" of the head unit, do u have to control the songs etc. through the ipod OR can it be controlled by the deck?? if i CANT control from the deck, then what mp3 player is easier to change tracks etc. while in the car as far as controlling in ur hand, pushing buttons etc? i dont really listen to music OUTSIDE the car, so the device will more or less stay in the car at all times. smaller is better sometimes but not always. if its too small, then it will be hard to push the buttons etc. while on the go.

and can u use the cigarette lighter as a power source AND have it connected to the "Aux" pioner adapter AT THE SAME TIME??

also, which is a better choice? i was searching around, and i read where there are 4th generation ipods now. wow! didnt know that .

how can i distinguish the differences between them?

i also read, iriver is a better product. but i dont know personally. i just want a player that will play my mp3 tracks AS IF they were burned onto a cd-r disk. as far as space is concerned, well that will be factored in later AFTER i choose a brand.

the ipods are wicked cool...but i too have heard that the iriver beats it in some categories!!!

i love my 4GB Ipod Mini, but i'm using it with an Alpine 9833 and the Alpine adaptor, so i control it from the HU. its perfect for a hardcore streetbeater becaue it won't skip

What a coincidence, I have one of each for sale...

BTW the Pioneer iPod adapter only controls from the deck with decks made after 2005, with a P in the model number. iRivers can only be connected through an auxillary input.

Your deck will not control anything except for volume, but you must remember these units are very small and can be mounted right on your console for easy access, just set you volume on the HU and control the tracks with the MP3 player.

As for power, alot of these units will go for a considerable amount of time off of a battery these days (not like the old portable cd players) Power adapters can be found for them though at Radioshack (the source) and other such places.

iRiver all the way, blows the iPod out of the water in every aspect. Sound quality, features, battery life, everything, it's awsome. I have the iRiver H120, and I'm selling it right now actually to afford an H140 (It's the same thing as the H120, just 40GB.. I need more space.. both models with discontinued, but if you ask anybody, the H100 series is much better musically than the H300's -- they tried to do too much with the H300's and ended up degrading the quality of the device). It's 20GB, I still have all the original accessories, 'has always been kept in it's leather case so it's in great condition. I've personally owned both... IMO if you're interested in a portable player for music, the H100 series is a much better option (which is why i'll be trying to hunt down an H140 on ebay or somewhere as opposed to getting the newer model from a retailer), if you want pictures and a color and a cheap flimsy plastic player the H300 would better suit you.

I have also owned both. I encode all of my music with EAC/Lame @ 320kbs from their original source CDs. I have both Shure E5's ($500) and Ultimate Ears Pro 10's ($950, custom molded to my ears). Don't get me started with SQ between the two. I've spent over $1500 on these earphones alone... I think I should know.

Err, I rip with EAC/OggEncGT3b1 (modified vorbis encoder) @ -q8 (~320kbps VBR) from the original source myself. And just because you spent $1,500 on headphones for a portable jukebox that didnt cost you 1/4th of that doesn't make you the end-all sound quality judge.
